He joined the Army Balloon factory and originated the BE series of tractor biplanes. He was a chief designer and test pilot for the Aircraft Manufacturing Company during World War 1 and produced several successful fighters and light bombers. He formed the De Havilland Aircraft Company in September 1920. The Moth, a light two-seater made by the company started the flying club movement in Great Britain. In World War 2 the company's most successful plane was the twin-engined Mosquito. After the war he pioneered the Comet airliner and the DH Ghost jet engines.
