  • Alan Bailey was born in Auckland on 21 July 1911, son of Mr and Mrs B L Bailey of Helensville. After three years post primary education he began work in the motor trade and evetually became a garage proprietor. He was interested in sport, playing rugby, tennis and golf.

    He enlisted at Rongotai on 20 as an Aircrafthand/General Duties (ACH/GD). On 15 October he began aircrew training at Rotorua, where he proved a cheerful, energetic and hard working pupil. He gained his Flying Badge at No 1 Service Flying Training School, Wigram on 12 April 1943 and was retained at Wigram attached to Beam Approach Training (BAT) flight after being commissioned in June. He proved a most reliable officer.

    Pilot Officer was then posted to the General Reconnaissance School, New Plymouth. Here he proved to be a very good navigator, gaining 83% in the exam. He was then posted to No 30 Squadron, Gisborne where he underwent training on Avengers. He was promoted Flying Officer in December asnd January 1944 went with the squadron to Espiritu Santo. After further operational training there the squadron moved to Piva airstrip. Here he was engaged chiefly on bombing strikes against Rabaul and the Tobera, Vunukanau and Lakunai airstrips.

    On 10 May 1944 Flying Officer Bailey was the pilot of an Avenger which was hit by ack-ack fire and crashed into the sea near Creet Harbour off the Lakunai airstrip. All the crew were classified as missing, believed killed. The other members of the crew were Sergeant L G Schlesinger and Warrant Officer R R Curtis.
