  • His portrait is attached to this record. His son writes: "On 3rd May 1941, my Dad's 23rd birthday, he was in the midst of his escape from Greece, that took around one month total. On that day my Dad had been trying to escape by boat from Greece to Crete when his escape boat got swept back onto the island of Anti Kythera (between Greece and Crete), that's where my Dad was on his 3rd May 1941 birthday. Someone took a photo of my Dad, he looks a mess, he has a piece of wood strapped to one foot, a boot on the other, the result of some Greek stealing one of his boots and another boot from another escaping Kiwi."

  • Obituary
RSA review: the official journal of the N.Z. Returned Services' Association

Mr Cyril Pasco wrote an obituary in the RSA Review under the heading of "Gunner Trumpeter" as follows: "I was prompted to write this obituary as my old cobber and fellow military trumpeter in the 4th Field Regiment 2NZEF, Gordon Kirk-Burnnand's funeral was taking place,

Several people responded to the obituary and wrote to Mr Pasco, including Mr Innes Kerr-Taylor, a cousin of Theodore Kerr-Taylor, the bombardier who died at sea. He confirmed that the family had been officially informed, that Theodore who died of severe tonsillitis was indeed the first death on active service in the 2NZEF.

Gordon was a brother of Tom Kirk-Burnnand, the original Director of the Kiwi Concert Party. Gordon served in the Kiwi Concert Party as 'General Electric Man', including audio. I think he was also a Don R for Div HQ."

Perhaps this would be the first death on active service of anyone in 2NZEF. I wonder if there is a report by the historian Murphy who wrote the artillery history of 4th, 5th and 6th Field Regiments, of this death aboard the Empress of Canada.

Gordon Kirk-Burnnand, HQ 26th battery, 4th Field Regiment, left New Zealand early in 1940, with the First Echelon aboard the Empress of Canada. We shared the sounding of the trumpet calls, except for the 'Last Post' which we played in unison together irrespective of weather. During the voyage to the Middle East, a member of the 4th Field Regiment- a bombardier- I think became ill after an injection and died. This was our first experience of sounding the 'Last Post' over a dead body. AWMM
