  • Paddy Beban was my Uncle and is remembered by me through memories of him by my father, Arthur Beban Jnr. He was a civilian pilot before the war and was devastated when he was unable to pass the Air Force entry requirements due to eyesight. He had successfully crash landed a small plane when clouded in during a southern alps crossing and was regarded as a good pilot. He was regarded by his family and friends as a wonderful character with a lively sense of humor, a trait he carried with him into the army. His army mates remembered him as the life of any party and fearless.He was killed while point for a platoon searching Green - Nissan - Island in the north Solomon area off Bougainville for Japanese left behind to suicide in delaying advances after the main force retreated. He was shot through the head by a sniper. His brother Leo served in the Mediterranean and fought in the Battle of Mon
