    The family understood that when he was killed in Crete, George, who was always known as Geordie, was fighting in the "infantillery", a temporary infantry unit made up of artillery men.

    Two of George's brothers also took part in the battle for Crete: John (Jock), a signaller, was severely wounded but was able to be evacuated from the island before it fell; Landale (Wellwood Landale were his Christian names), was in a front-line ambulance unit. He also was evacuated from the island just before it fell to the Germans. Public - John Neill - Other relative - 9 September 2017 - George's brothers, Jock (John), of Bluff, Landale, of Invercargill, and his sisters, Edith and Kate, of Invercargill.
