  • Rolph Benfield was the son of Joseph and Violetta Benfield, of Wellington, New Zealand. Husband of Sarah Jean (nee Griffin) Benfield (married 17 October 1942), father of Rolph Alistair born 17 October 1943.

    He registered for Military training aged 14 years in 1925.

    Attended Brooklyn, Island Bay and Newtown Schools.

    Attended MacKenzies Engineering Academy, Aitcken Street, Wellington

    For a number of years after leaving school he was employed in dairy factories at Maharahara and Eketahuna, then Wellington.

    F/O R. Fletcher, Officer Commanding "A" Flight wrote: " His disposition is cheerful and he has always been energetic and keen to carry out any duties allotted to him. he is hard working and shows initiative and in consequence has kept discipline at a high standard in his squad." Recommended for commission at all the training centres.

    Awarded his Flying Badge 19 October 1942.

    Still single at attestation, his next of kin was later his wife, Mrs S.J. Benfield, 73 Devonshire Road, Miramar, Wellington.

    Pilot Officer Benfield was the 2nd Pilot of a Hudson aircraft which crashed into the Waitemata harbour between Hobsonville and Pine Island on 25th January 1943 during a training exercise. Both occupants of the aircraft lost their lives.

    Name is often spelled incorrectly as Ralph.
