    • Herbert Benson was the son of Frederick Horace Benson and of Elizabeth Maud Benson (nee Cree), of Oamaru, Otago, New Zealand. AWMM
    • Herbert James Benson was born 7 October 1918 at Christchurch, the eldest child and only son of Frederick Horace Wilson Benson 1891-1982 who had married Elizabeth Maud Cree on 7 November 1917. His only sister was Margaret Joan (known as Joan) born 1921 who married Neville Turner in 1946.
