      N.Z. WING COMMANDER

      SPITFIRE SQUADRON (Special Correspondent.) LONDON, March 5;

      Wing Commander R. C, Grant, D.F.C. and bar, D.F.M.. of Auckland, was killed on active service. He was buried on Friday at Brookwood cemetery, after a service at the Gravesend church. Group Captain A. J. Manson represented the New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr. W. J. Jordan, and Mr. Walter Nash, Squadron Leader J. G. McDermont represented the R.N.Z.A.F. headquarters, and Squadron Leader E. D. Abernethy represented the Air Mission in Ottawa. Wing Commander Grant had . an outstanding career as a fighter pilot. He won the D.F.M. before joining the New Zealand Spitfire squadron m the autumn of 1941. ' He arrived as a flight-sergeant, and by summer of the following year was the squadron’? commanding officer. For his rest period, he made a lecture tour of Canadian stations. tie recently returned to England and wa= promoted wing commander. He led the wing in several recent operations; and had shot down eight enemy planes. He was regarded as being among the best fighter pilots New Zealand had produced in this war. His brother lan was shot down over France while with the New Zealand Spitfire squadron, Wing Commander Grant shooting clown the German who got his brother. The New Zealand Spitfire Squadron, which recently ended its rest period and returned to “front line” operations, paid a last tribute to its former commanding officer.     The death has occurred on active service overseas of Flight Lieutenant Lindsay Stuart Black, D.F.C. Flight Lieutenant Black was born in Wellington in 1914, & was educated at a preparatory school near London, while his parents (Mr. and Mrs. Charles Black, of Levin) resided in England. Returning to NZ he completed, his education at Scots College, attaining the distinction of being dux of the college, and at Victoria University College, where he secured his LL.B. in 1939. He joined the legal staff of Mr. Andrew Todd, & upon Mr. Todd relinquishing his practice took up a position with Messrs. Buddle, Anderson, Kirkcaldie, & Parry, of Wellington. In 1938 he joined the staff of Messrs. Blenkhorn and Todd, of Levin, with whom he continued until he enlisted in the Air Force late in 1939. He had a distinguished service record, and gained the D.F.C. at the end of last year for conspicuous service and devotion to duty. Flight Lieutenant Black was a keen athlete and secured Wellington provincial honours in 1936 in the half-mile event. He was also prominent for some years in the University athletic tournaments, representing Victoria College in both boxing and long-distance running.   • On the 3rd August 1942, a Dornier Do 217E-4 Wnr.1225 (U5 + AD) from Stab III/Kampfgeschwader was bombing Wellingborough, Northants. It was in turn attacked by F/Lt Lindsay Black (RNZAF) in a Spitfire Vb of No.485 Squadron and shot down. The aircraft crashed near Cranford, a small village on the outskirts of Kettering, killing all four crew members. Uffz Eugen Beyerer, Uffz Erich Huwald, Uffz Zerak and Gefr Frisch all now lie in the Deutsche Soldatenfriedhof Cannock Chase: Block 9. Row 6. Grave 35.
