  • William Caffery was the husband of Rongomate, Mangaia, Cook Islands.

    Occupation stated as miner but employer was New Zealand Shipping Company at the time of enlistment.

    Embarked Wellington, 2 April 1916; disembarked Suez, 3 May 1916.
    Embarked Alexandria for France, 10 May 1916; joined 1st Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, Armentieres, 16 June 1916.
    Found guilty, 13 July 1916, of when on Active Service being absent without leave from Tattoo, 18 June, until Tattoo, 21 June 1916: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2, forfeited 14 days' pay, and forfeited a further 3 days' pay.
    Found guilty, 22 August 1916, of being absent without leave: forfeited 8 days' pay, and deprived of a further 2 days' pay.
    Reported 'unaccounted for', in the field, 30 September 1916.
    Court of Enquiry, 20 December 1916, concluded soldier was 'missing, believed to have been killed in action'.
