  • Campbell Buchanan was the son of Joseph and Emma Buchanan, Port Chalmers, Otago, New Zealand

Buchanan was leading signalman of the HMNZS 'Kiwi' on the night of 29 January 1943, when HMNZS mine-sweepers 'Kiwi' and 'Moa' identified and attacked the Japanese submarine I-1, off the north-west coast of Guadacanal. 'Kiwi' rammed the submarine three times, and it ran aground and was destroyed.

While manning the searchlight on HMNZS 'Kiwi' Signalman

Buchanan was fired on and wounded. He continued to operate the searchlight even after being wounded. He died on January 31, 1943, he was the only New Zealand casualty during this engagement.

Next of kin details compiled from information in the Casualty lists published in the newspapers.

A photograph of Buchanan's grave at Tulagi, Florida Island, is on display in the Auckland War Memorial Museum, 'Our Small Ships', 'Scars on the Heart,' gallery.

Associated items on display in "Our small ships" are: a model of the Corvette mine-sweeper HMNZS 'Kiwi', the crests of the 'Kiwi' and 'Moa', a cap ribbon, HMNZS 'Kiwi', the sextant from the Japanese submarine I-1, and photographs of the 'Kiwi' at sea, the ship's company of HMNZS 'Kiwi' marching up Queen Street, Auckland, the remains of the Japanese submarine I-1 sunk off Guadalcanal, the HMNZS 'Kiwi' at Devonport Dockyards for repairs; and an Oerlikon cannon.
