    • Son of Alexander and Sarah Ann Callan, of Pidgeon Valley, Wakefield, Nelson. Native of Wellington

      Service number 1/23 assigned at first enlistment for Samoa. AWMM
    • One of two brothers, the only children of Sarah Ann Callan, nee Francis . Sarah was born at Richmond Brook , in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough, daughter of Mr Thomas Francis and his wife Ellen. She was known as Annie. The other brother was James Henry Callan, known as Todd who was killed at Gallipoli a month after Alexander. Their mother never fully recovered from the tragedy.
      The Marlborough Express of 08/07/1915 has the following biographical details of Alexander's life : "The eldest son of Mrs S.A Callan of Grassmere, and grandson of Mr Thomas Francis ,sen.,of Seddon. The deceased worked for many years in Mr E Parker's garage, and was a prominent member of the Opawa Football Club. After leaving Blenheim he joined the Wellington GPO motor service. When the war broke out he went to Samoa, returning in time to leave with the 4 th Reinforcements for Egypt. He was 28 years of age."
