  • Son of George and Mary Calman, of Wanganui.

"Entered this School in 1902. He volunteered for service in the Main Expeditionary Force, but was unable to get away owing to an old injury to his knee. He eventually left with the 11th Reinforcements, remaining a few days only in Egypt, and sailing for Marseilles direct with 2500 men. After only a few weeks’ training in France, he was sent to the trenches. A civil engineer by profession, he held a Government position in Wellington, where he proved a great favourite, being connected with boating and other clubs. At the time of his death, which took place on October 1st, 1916, he was appointed Acting Sergt.-Major." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School]) AWMM
