  • Lionel was killed along with his brother Brian Albert Burgess in the North African campaign. The boys were the only two sons of Elizabeth Annie Burgess. Lionel was the youngest person to qualify as an accountant at the University of New Zealand as it was then. He also set up the NZ Patriotic Fund. A more unlikely person to be a gunner would be hard to find.
