Prior to joining the airforce his flight experience was that of a passeger on a flight from Wigram to Auckland of Easter 1935 or 1936 and return. He was a pupil member of the Canterbury Aero Club and had flown 3 hours and 40 minutes of instruction dual flying

On the night of 3/4 September 1942 75 Squadron took part in a raid on Emden. Flying a Wellington III (Number X3396AA) they took off at 23.28 from Mildenhall. The plane and crew were lost and all are buried in Sage Cemetery in Germany. The other crew members were Sergeants J Law, John Trevor Vivian Gill, Rupert Alfred William Newman, and Rupert Ernest Renton who was a Wireless Operator and Air Gunner. All but Law were in the RNZAF.

Started out as a pilot then remustered as an Air Observer (7 March 1941) and then as a Navigator "B" ( 23 July 1942).

Was awarded an Air Observers Badge 8 November 1941

Had completed 250 hours on his second operation.

Lost on a raid on Emden, Germany (by 11 aircraft , 2 lost). All five crew were buried at Wittmund, but later reinterred at Sage, 24km south of Oldenburg.

7002 NZ airmen would graduate from Canadian Aircrew Training. 131553 men would be trained in Canada for flying duties. The Canadian scheme ran from 29 April 1940 to 31 March 1945. Number 3 Elementary Flying Training School was formed at Harewood in August 1940. 11 September 1939 : The Air Department asked for vlounteers both for aircrew and groudstaff. They had to be betwwen the ages of 17.5 to 28 years, unmarried, pass the medical examinations and possess education up to the School Certificate or University Entrance examination. These requirements were later changed to allow a greater number to fall into the selection criteria. At the Ground Training School the men attended a four week course of basic service training and drill. Subjects they studied included elementary navigation, mathematics, airmanship, Air Force law, discipline and hygiene. Those who passed the course satisfactorily were then posted either to an Elementary Flying Training School or to the Observer and Air Gunnery School.
