  • Dear Mother,

These P.C's are a bit dirty but I cannot help that, they are of the ship I came over in & I will be quite satisfied if I get as good a boat to come back on. If Jack comes over with the 28ths I will be put in the same lot as him so you see I will be able to look after him. Nell tells me he is bringing a kiss over for me, I am sure it will be very welcome but I would have rather have had it first hand. I don't suppose Jack would like to part with it as he will never get a kiss from a nicer girl than Nell.

    Harold

The above is a postcard written by Harold while onboard the troopship 'Tahiti'. Nell was his girlfriend at the time, Jack, his older brother. Further correspondence from Harold has been published in the Auckland-Waikato Historical Journal, No 66.(Sept. 1995)

His mother was left a widow with 10 children in 1897; Harold was 2 1/2 at the time and his younger brother 2 months old. Sarah's elderly parents were also living with them. The family moved to Auckland in 1902.

On return from World War 1, he lived at Waikowhai. He never married. AWMM
