Flt Sgt R F Carrodus was involved in Operation Exodus. This operation involved the repatriation of Prisoners of War from Europe to the UK.
The crew were returning to RAF Skellingthorpe after another mission. The aircraft hit a tree while flying low and crashed at Hardingstone just over a mile SSE from the centre of Northampton. It is believed the crew had earlier brought some of the earliest repatriated ex-Prisoners of War into Wing Airfield in Buckinghamshire.
