    • James Cartwright was the son of William Robert and Maud Cartwright (nee Robinson) of Pleasant Point, Canterbury

Next of kin details compiled from information in the Casualty lists published in the newspapers. AWMM
    • He had one sister, Katherine Elizabeth Cochrane nee Cartwright who was 4 years younger. Jim was born on 27/03/1919 at Pleasant Point. He attended Pleasant Point District High school, and Timaru Boys for his last year. He then went to Christchurch Teachers College after being encouraged to do so by his parents who were farmers. He followed many of his relations in doing this. After the normal 2 year training he received a scholarship to do a third year specialising in agriculture. During this time he represented his province, Canterbury,in rugby, playing on the wing. Prior to him enlisting in the Navy he was teaching at St Andrews College. He spent time at Dartmouth Naval College in England where he graduated top of his class. His parents received notification that he had survived D Day, however his ship was torpedoed very soon after with very few survivors. • I was born 1/11/45 and my middle name is Cartwright - in memory of Jimmy According to my mother he was a fine footballer and may well have been an All Black if the tour to South Africa had not been postponed until after the war I was reminded about my connection to him every time his name was read out at my school (where a name was read from the Roll of Honour each morning)
    Public - Donald - 22 Paengawhāwhā 2015
  • 'Jimmy' Cartwright was the apple of my late mother's eye. His photograph was on the mantlepiece when I was a child and remained prominent in her homes over many years. My younger brother, who was born shortly after my mother very belatedly discovered that Jimmy had died on D Day, was given the second name of Cartwright to memorialise his death and both my brother and I were sent to St Andrew's College in Christchurch because he had been a housemaster there. My mother obviously thought the world of him, as did our late father.
