PILOT-OFFICER CAVE FORMER GISBORNEITE PROMINENT FOOTBALLER Members of the Chief Post Office staff in Gisborne and of the Old Boys' Rugby Football Club have learned with the deepest regret of the death of Pilot-Officer Jack Milton Cave in air operations with the Royal Air Force. He is the first casualty to affect either group, so far as is known, and much sympathy is felt for the parents of the young airman, who lived at Tirau. The late Pilot-Officer Cave was employed in the clerical branch of the Chief Post Office in Gisborne from November, 1935, to March, 1939, during which time he gained outstanding popularity with his fellow-employees. His ability was recognised by departmental authorities when be was transferred to the staff division at head office in Wellington, which he left to join the Royal New Zealand Air Force in September, immediately after the outbreak of the war.
He trained preliminarily in New Zealand before leaving with an early New Zealand group to take up service with the Royal Air Force, and gave promise of developing into a first-class airman, which promise he later fulfilled when he was posted as a pilot.

He will be well remembered as a Rugby footballer who came up through the grades of the Old Boys’ club, earning representative honours in the junior grade, and transferring to the senior grade in the season prior to his departure from Gisborne.
