  • Robert Lovell Chappell and Katherine Chappell (nee Reid) of Grey Lynn, Auckland (Parents).

He was a Staff Pilot who had been posted to 5 Bombing and Gunnery School the May prior to his death.

While returning from an exercise in a Bolingbroke IVT 10000 the plane crashed 4 miles NE of the village of Quill Lake, about 30 miles NE of the base at Dafoe, Skatchewan, Canada. All four crew were killed instantly, but owing to the snowed in roads it was impossible to reach the wreckage until late in the afternoon.
