    • Peter West was the son of Ernst Vilhelm West and Carrie Buick West of Palmerston North. His brother was Pilot Officer David George West who also died on active service.

      Member of the Middle Districts Aero Club, and received his A License in January 1937, selected for a Short Service Commission with the Royal Air Force in December 1937, and embarked overseas in February 1938.

    • The four West lads all went to war, the two youngest, John a Petty Officer in the Royal NZ Navy and Ernest a Warrant Officer in the RNZAF came home at the wars end.
      Peter joined the RAF in 1937 under the Empire Pilots scheme and flew several types of aircraft. He married an English girl who was three months pregnant when his Lancaster went missing over the North Sea. His body was washed up on the shores of Denmark, the country his grandfather emigrated to New Zealand from.
