Norman's niece, Jenny Campbell, has provided the following biography: Norman Claude Campbell was born on 5 October 1895 and was the second son of Hugh and Hannah Campbell (nee Allott).

Norman attended the Havelock North Primary School and Sunday School at St Columba's Presbyterian Church. He was presented with the book "Plutarch's Lives" by St Colomba's, Havelock North, for passing the Assemblys Examination in 1908.

His life, like that of his brothers, was planned to be a life on the farm. He was working as a shepherd for his father on Ridgemount Station when he enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 14 February 1917. He was not posted until 26 July 1917.

Between 22 October 1917 and 10 January 1918 he was given leave without pay from the Army so that he could help with the sheep on his fathers farms. His personnel record indicates that on 4 March 1918 he returned to Ridgemount Station without leave. On 22 March 1918 Norman was court martialled for deserting His Majesties Service. He pleaded not guilty. As time has passed we do not know Norman's reason, it could have been one of many, and his personnel records do not elaborate. He was found guilty and was sentenced to 112 days detention. This sentence was to be mitigated should Norman embark for overseas and any unexpired portion of the sentence was to be remitted and his New Zealand records endorsed accordingly.

On 23 April 1918 Norman embarked from Wellington as a part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, B Company, 36 Reinforcements destined for England. He disembarked at Suez on 31 May 1918 to the Australian Camp at Suez. From there he sailed on 4 July 1918 for Southampton, arriving on 18 July 1918

From England he was posted to the Rifle Brigade at Procton. On 21 September 1918 he left for France. On 28 September he was posted to "D" Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade as Rifleman. Anneux was captured, with Havrincourt and Graincourt, by the 62nd (West Riding) Division on 20 and 21 November 1917. It remained in British hands until the following 6th December. It was then recaptured on 27 September 1918 and the New Zealand Division carried on the advance in October 1918

Norman was killed on 5 October 1918. Armistice was declared on 11 November 1918. He is buried in the Anneux British Cemetery. The Cemetery stands in a broad valley running East and West between Bourlon Wood and Graincourt. It is bounded by a hornbeam hedge and planted with poplar sand Irish yews. The 2nd Oxfordshire and Buckingham Light Infantry, the 1st Auckland Regiment, the First New Zealand Rifle Brigade and the 4th Gordon Highlanders erected wooden memorials in the Cemetery to honour their dead of October 1918. Norman lies near to the Great Cross in plot IV of the Cemetery, number 3 of row B Norman is also remembered on the headstone of his father and mothers grave in the Campbell plot of the Havelock North Cemetery AWMM
