  • Alan Copland was the son of Martin Ephraim and Amy Copland of Christchurch.

The photographs of his grave was supplied by his friend, Private Gordon Williams, who was with him when he was killed and helped bury him. He decorated his grave with white desert snail shells. Under the photo in Mr Williams' album is written 'Only the best'.

The photo of the Helix desertorum (Forskal, 1775) shells was taken by the Museum Photographer in 1999. The collection of shells was brought back from the Western Desert by Captain F.W. Short MC, Imperial Army who served and was an active of the Auckland Conchology Club serving as President, Secretary and committee member. AWMM
