    Born in Auckland, he was the only son of John Corcoran and of Mary Anna Maud Corcoran (nee Graham), of King St, Whangarei. He spent his early years in Okaihau, moving to Whangarei about ten years before his death and followed various occupations until he was apprenticed to the cabinet making industry at the Farmers Trading Company.

    He was a member of the Whangarei Branch of the Workers' Educational Association and for one year acted as secretary. He was also an active member of the Methodist Church in Whangarei.

    His army years took him to Fiji, New Caledonia, and to another Pacific Island where he was killed.
