  • Posted to France on 5 September. Joined the 1 Battalion, Auckland Regiment on January 1918

    Campbell joined the 2 Battalion, Auckland Regiment 27 August. Three days later he received gunshot wounds to both his knees. This happened towards the end of the Battale of Bapaume (21 August-1 September). Both his legs were amputated as a consequence of his wounds and this trauma proved fatal for him. He was admitted to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 1 October 1918 but only survived a further fortnight.(Church, p.198)

    Thomas Campbell was the son of Thomas Duncan Campbell and Anne Campbell, of Papakura, Auckland, New Zealand.
