  • Mervyn Cotterell was the son of Charles Richard Cotterell and of Esther Lillian Cotterell (nee Lee), of Moerewa, Northland, New Zealand.

    Attended school at Pamapuria, Opua, Kohukohu, Rawene District High and Whangarei High School.

    He obtained his Diploma in Dairying at Massey College. Subsequently he entered the employment of the NZ Co-op Dairy Company at Waitoa, and at the time of his enlistment was with the Matakana Dairy Company.

    A keen sportsman, he captained the Matakana Rugby Team and the Matakana Tennis Team. In 1939 he represented the Rodney Union as half-back.
