  • Son of David James Crothers and Hilda Ann Crothers of Wellington.

Leonard Crothers was educated at Island Bay School and Wellington College. He studied elocution under Mr W. J. Mountjoy in Wellington, before going overseas to study at a London theatrical school. While in London, he won a gold medal in elocution, and awards for dancing. He starred in two British films in uncredited roles, 'A Yank at Oxford' and 'The Housemaster', which were screened in New Zealand.

He returned to New Zealand to enlist for the Second World War, but his ship was torpedoed between England and America. He returned to England, before catching another ship home, and worked as a broadcaster in Christchurch before enlisting with the Air Force.

He saw active service in the Pacific before being invalided home with a serious illness, before dying at home in Wellington.
