When first tried to enlist, Jack was declined as he was on essential service. He was finally allowed to, but instead of the Navy which is where he wished to serve, he was very disappointed to find himself in the Army.

He talked very little about his war service, but one story he told was when he was working as a despatch motorbike rider in Egypt. He came across and stopped in front of a wire stretched across the road at neck height. This had been left by the enemy to decapitate the riders.

Jack Stone married Hilda Latimer and had four children : Beth, Grant, Heather & Trudy.

Other members of his immediate family to serve in World War II were his father Stephen Osbourne, who had also served in the First World War, and brothers Arthur Osbourne (known as Tap) and Leslie Osbourne Stone. AWMM
