  • Obituary
Advice has been received from the Minister of Defence, Mr. F. Jones, by Mr and Mrs. H. H. De Costa that their elder son Second Lieutenant Ralph Granville De Costa, who had previously been reported missing, must now be presumed to have died of wounds in the Western Desert on July 15, 1942. The Minister stated that this reclassification had been made after the completion of all possible inquiries and the lapse of time.

Second Lieutenant De Costa, who was aged 35 when he was reported missing, was born in Gisborne and educated at the Gisborne Central School, the Gisborne High School, and later at Waitaki Boys’ High School. Upon completing his education, Second Lieutenant De Costa joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand and remained here until 1937, when he was transferred to the Putaruru branch. He was subsequently transferred to the Kaikohe office, and it was while he was there that he enlisted with the First Echelon as an infantryman. Second Lieutenant De Costa went overseas with the Second Echelon and won his commission in the field. He was posted missing at El Alamein.

Taking a keen interest in sport, Second Lieutenant De Costa while in Gisborne was a representative oarsman. He was a popular member of the Gisborne Rowing Club. He was also keenly interested in tennis. Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 29 June 2023 - GISBORNE HERALD, VOLUME LXXIII, ISSUE 21977, 22 MARCH 1946, PAGE 4
