Robert Foster Dill, D.S.O., and Margaret Douglas Dill, of Instow, DevonFrom an unknown soldier's diary: 'Sunday 25 May: What a day! The line gave in the afternoon and what a holocaust. We were divebombed, strafed and shelled all day. Casualties were heavy. John Wright got killed, John Dill wounded and I hear that Monty Neill also got it. We retired through Galatos and took up a position on another ridge. 23Bn went in on a counter attack. Right at dusk I ran into mortar fire and apparently got knocked as I found myself at 6Fd. ADS early in the morning. The worst day in my life.'
