  • Son of Percy and Martha Anne Dillon, of Rai Valley, Marlborough.

    Brother of Noel "Sam" Warner DILLON (Service Number 16190), Infantry Reinforcements.

    Mick was with Supply company as part of the 2nd Echelon that was diverted to Britain for a time before going to the Middle East. Mick survived both Greece and Crete, being among the last to be evacuated both times, and survived many battles unscathed in the desert after that, but was killed during the famous NZ Division breakout at Minqar Qaim in 1942.

    All Mick's and Sam's letters home from the war were kept by their sisters Peg and Lorna, which Sam didn't know. Not long before she died in 1993, to his great surprise, Peg presented her set to Sam. Lorna's set was found some years later when her grandson was cleaning out a derelict farmhouse with a view to restoration. They were presented to Sam also, again to his great surprise.

    Their parents were Percy DILLON , a farmer at Opouri Valley which runs off Rai Valley, and Martha Annie MCDOWELL 1884-1964. Percy and Martha married in 1908.
