    • Son of John and Johanna Carroll

      Attended Sacred Heart College c.1913-1915

War service: Found guilty by District Court Martial, Trentham, 18 June 1918, of when on Active Service striking his Superior Officer: awarded 28 days' detention.
      Embarked Wellington, 10 July 1918.

Lost at sea, about 6.30 am, 4 September 1918, when he jumped overboard: delirious as a result of purulent bronchitis.
      Medal: British War Medal

Parents: John and Johanna Carroll, 18 Telford Avenue, Mount Eden, Auckland. Born at Kuaotunu, Coromandel Peninsula

Parents: John and Johanna CARROLL (both b. Tipperary, Ireland)

In 1918 when a man wanted to join the army, he had to have permission from his parents if he was under 21. His two older brothers who were already overseas protested vehemently. Finally Terence's parents said if he passed his Solicitor's General Knowledge examination, he could go. He gave up all sport etc and studied hard and passed with flying colours. It then eventuated that all the paperwork had been filled in and he was just awaiting consent. The day the exam results were published he telegraphed his parents asking them to telegraph their consent, which they supplied.

When 19 year old Terence left home he rode his horse up the hill and stopped at the top to wave to the family. His mother said "We won't see that boy again". My father's comment: "She always was a bit fey, that one"

Terence died from influenza on 4th September 1918, aged 20. He was delirious and jumped overboard at 6.30 am. The ship did not go back for him. His records have now been changed from "drowned" to "accident". Some younger family members have been distressed in recent years that the implication was suicide, but my father said they always knew what happened. They knew and believed the stories of the flu, overcrowding, raging temperatures and quick death. They believed all this because they were told by those present - the other men on "Tahiti". AWMM
    • Our family name is wrongly spelled above - should be CARROLL.
I think the years recorded above for his time at Sacred Heart College are wrong; that these years refer to his cousin Terence Eugene Carroll; that Terence's time at Sacred Heart College was about 1913-15. Public - James Terence Kearney - Other Relative - 23 January 2015 - Family recollection.
