    • Reason for Pilot and Aircraft Loss :

RAF Hurricane HL858 QO-Y - piloted by New Zealander Flight Sergeant Peter M. Gawith DFM of Wairarapa, New Zealand - took off from RAF Hunsdon, Hertfordshire on 28-29 July 1942 - on a 2 Hurricane aircraft operation (a night intruder operation to the Luftwaffe (German) airfield at Gilze-Rijen). Flight Sergeant Gawith DFM aircraft was believed to have been shot down by Luftwaffe fighter pilot Oblt Heinrich Prinz sur Sayn Wittgenstein of 9/NJG2 - at 01.11 hours over the North Sea. Flight Sergeant Gawith DFM body was never recovered - and he is remembered on the Runnymeade Memorial at England.
The other Hurricane on this operation was also lost (also most probably shot down). The Pilot was Flight Sergeant Alexander Shirm RAFVR (England) Service # 990450. His body was recovered.

Flight Sergeant Peter M Gawith DFM is also remembered at his home district - in New Zealand - on the Carterton War Memorial (1939-1945), Wairarapa District, North island, New Zealand. Public - Jenifer - Researcher - 9 May 2019 - (England)
