  • Herbert Redward was the son of Thomas Albert Redward and of Ethel R. Redward (nee Neal), of Green Meadows, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.

This is how R.D. Munro describes the events of 12 April 1945:

'This was a bad day for the Battery. G and H Troops were both across the Santerno River early in the morning when they were heavily shelled. The signals exchange house of A Battery suffered several direct hits in the afternoon and part of it collapsed, burying several men. Sergeant L. Walker and Gunner H.W. Redward suffered mortal injuries and two others were badly hurt and shaken. At approximately 1830 hours G Troop and A Battery CP moved to new locations bringing the whole of A Battery over the River Santerno.' (R. Munrow, p. 57) AWMM
