  • Harold Vickery was the son of Percy Harry and Phyllis Elizabeth Vickery, of Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand.

The aircraft carrier Glorious, returning with RAF aircraft and personnel of 46 and 263 Squadrons, escorted by the destroyers Acastra and Ardent, were surprised at 15.45 by the German battlecruisers Gneisenau and Scharnhorst in company with several other warships about 300 miles west of Narvik. The battlecruisers opened fire at 16.30 and within 90 minutes all three British ships had been destroyed. Out of 1559 men only 40 survived, including New Zealander Flight Lieutenant P.G. Jameson of 46 Squadron. Three other New Zealanders were lost without trace: Pilot Officer Louis Regionald Jacobson DFC and Flying Officer Harold Edward Vickery. Refer to Errol W. Martyn, For Your Tommorow, Vol. 1, page 83 and 84 for more details. AWMM
