Conan Frazerhurst was the son of Joseph Livingstone Frazer (Frazerhurst, Frazer-Hurst) (3/579) and Constance Marie Frazerhurst, of Hastings, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.
A qualified pharmacist and medical student, he had been educated in Hora Hora Primary school, before leaving with his family for Tauranga where he completed his education. Returning to Whangarei, he obtained a position as a manager of Burfoot's Pharmacy until enlistment in September 1939.
He had participated in the Grecian campaign, and his duties in charge of the wounded led him to volunteer to remain at his post. He was reported missing on May 30, 1940. Subsequently he organised the distribution of medical supplied in Stalag B and the German Tost Hospital, where his initiative in obtaining supplies for the sick impressed not only his own medical officers but also the Germans.
A letter received by Doctor Frazerhurst from the officer-in-charge of the hospital, referred in the highest terms to Staff-Sergeant Frazerhurst's high character and devotion to duty.
Had been a POW in Stalag 8B after being captured in the Greek campaign. He was killed while being evacuated by train to Odessa, after liberation from the Russians. Two carriages telescoped, killing eight men, four of whom were New Zealanders. The Russians buried the victims with full military honours at Cracow.
Two sons, brothers, served in WW2, Terence Simon Frazerhurst (2670) and Conan Frazerhurst (31154).
Served as Frazerhurst. Registered at birth as Frazer-Hurst. Next of kin details compiled from information in the Casualty lists published in the newspapers. AWMM
