    • Richmond Dix Gerrard was the son of Ruka Whare Gerrard and Nora Ellen Gerrard, of Tokomaru Bay AWMM
    • He was loved dearly by his mother who awaited his return.
My mother Nora Ellen Chatfield (Maiden Name, Hill) said that her nanny, Nora Ellen Gerrard would sit on the porch in Tokomaru Bay looking at the old pine tree down her driveway waiting for her son to return home. It is said that he followed his older brother to war, Sgnt John Gerrard also known as Tieke Makarini Gerrard. John was the only brother who returned home. A plaque was placed in rememberence that one day Uncle Richmond would return to his whanau & Iwi. Public - Te wairua - Other Relative - 23 April 2015 - Family Oral History

  • My Great Uncle John Ledgerwood, Stalag 18A's Kiwi Padre, is the person standing by Richmond's grave in one of these photos and is likely to have officiated at his burial. I have this original photograph and visited the exact spot he was initially buried in Wolfsberg cemetery. I visited his final resting place in Klagenfurt War cemetery in Austria in 2017 and laid a poppy on his grave. I'm researching my Great Uncle's war life currently.

    Report
  • Every year I march on ANZAC Day in rememberence for the fallen, the unnamed and those who still have not returned home. I march for my great uncle. Would any others of our family line like to join and does anyone have any stories to share of Richmond or John? I would really love to hear them & pass them onto my son who I also named after Richmond :)
