  • Douglas De Laney was the eldest son of William Charles and Selena De Laney, of George Street, Hikurangi, New Zealand.

    Born in Whangarei, he was educated at Kamo and Hikurangi Schools, where he took a keen interest in Rugby Football and had been playing in England.

    He was employed at the Economic Stores, Hikurangi and the New Zealand Railway prior to his enlistment. He left NZ in August 1942 at the age of 18 to finish his training in Canada.
