  • Son of James William Henry and Elizabeth Agnes Glennie of Green Meadows, Hawkes Bay

    The Fort Mumford was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese submarine I 27 (Commanded by Fukumura) in the Indian Ocean about 500 miles north west of Ceylon in position 10 north 71 east whitely on maiden voyage from Vancouver, British Columbia for Lyttelton, New Zealand and then on to Suez and Alexandria via Colombo and Aden. The ship carried 6649 tons of military stores. The Master, Captain John H R Smith, OBE, and crew of 45 and 4 gunners, were lost. The sole survivor, Gunner H. Bailey, was rescued by an Arab Dhow and landed at Mikindani, Tanganyika AWMM
