  • Circumstances of death: SS British General was en route from Swansea, South Wales to Aruba in ballast (i.e. empty, not carrying any cargo). The ship was sailing independently having departed from Convoy OA 222 when it was attacked by U37 (Oehrn- submarine commander) in the Atlantic 550 miles West of Valentia Island in position 51.42N - 24 03W and again torpedoed by U37 on 7 October 1940 and sank in position 51.42N - 24.50W. The Master, Captain Frank Armstrong, and crew of 44 were all lost. AWMM
