  • Son of John and Ethel D. Gray of Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand.

    Pilot Officer Gray was well known in Auckland sporting circles. A versatile athlete, he was halfback for the Auckland intermediate Rugby representative team before he left for Wigram, and was a member of the Takapuna club intermediate team. He was opening batsman for the Takapuna Grammer School's 1st eleven, and during the 1937-38 season was a member of the North Shore Club's senior B eleven. He was a prominent swimmer and also a keen golfer.

    He was educated at the Vauxhall School and the Takapuna Grammer School.

    He received flying training at Mangere from the late Squadron-leader D.M. Allan, and in 1938 went to Wigram as a member of the of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, leaving there in March, 1939, for England to take a commission in the Royal Air Force. In the Royal Air Force he was engaged on the Irish Sea patrol, and was recently posted to a training station in Scotland for an intensive course in a large type of American bombers. He recently enjoyed some leave in England.
