  • John Tovey was the son of Alexander Martin Tovey and of Jessie Clare Tovey (nee Roberts), of Auckland, New Zealand.

    Attended King's College 1927-32 where he was in Parnell House.

    He was a Wellington bomber Captain in the first 1000-bomber raid over Cologne, a retaliation for the intensive bombing of London.

    He failed to return from an operational flight in the Middle East. AWMM

  • I never had the chance to meet you, but I grew up hearing stories about you from my mother. You were her little brother and she loved you with all her heart. For many years after the war, she still hoped you would walk through the door, after being a prisoner of war , perhaps. My grandmother never recovered from the loss of her only son. My younger son, Ben. looks so like you. I'm sure my mother's life would have been so different, if only you had returned.
