  • Eldest son of Mr and Mrs P. Stringfellow of Hikurangi. Born at Wigan, Lancashire, England, he came to New Zealand with his parents at the age of six and was educated at the Hikurangi School.

He was an exceptionally keen footballer, playing with the Hikurangi League Team and with representative Northland team. Overseas he maintained his active interest and was playing football up to 17 September, six days before being killed in action.

Sapper Stringfellow volunteered on 3 October 1940, and was drafted to Fiji, where he served for eight months in an engineering unit before returning to New Zealand for leave before being sent overseas. He served in the Middle East and Syria before going to Italy. He was employed in the Hikurangi coal mines. AWMM
