Information based on his obituary in the Evening Post, Thursday 2 September 1999 reads as follows:John Thomas Shacklock, businessman was educated at Timaru Boys High School and St Andrews, Christchurch. In 1937 he married Sally Lindsay and they had one daughter. They were divorced and he later married Lindsay Knight with whom he had two daughters.He served in the Middle East and Italy during WWII with the 20th Armoured Regiment as a Captain.He was managing director of Shacklock Limited from 1951 - 1971.Jack Shacklock described himself as a humble foundryman. Understatement was one of his strong suits. He would not have admitted it, but he was one of New Zealand's gentlemen industrialists. The family fortunes were founded on the pioneering work of his grandfather, Henry Ely Shacklock, a Nottingham ironmoulder who set up a foundry in Dunedin in 1871. Henry Shacklock's coal range, designed for burning New Zealand coals, was a winner, and 40 men were permanently assigned to their construction. Henry, who had an interest in astronomy, named his range the Orion. Hundreds survive to this day, a testament to their quality.It was expected of Jack Shacklock that he would join the family firm. He was apprenticed to Andersons Ltd, a Christchurch engineering firm, before moving to a fulltime career in Dunedin. From 1951 to 1971, when the company linked with Fisher and Paykel he was its managing director. Engineeering skills, not just ironmoulding, had become the order of the day, and Shacklock himself was in the thick of it. Shacklock was retained by Fisher and Paykel in an exports role in London.Jack Shacklock and his wife Lindsay later moved to Nelson, where he was able to indulge his passion for car restoration and boating (he was a founder of the Tasman Cruising Club). He moved to Greytown in 19191, and later to Masterton. AWMM
