  • Melvin Greenslade was the son of Robert William Mason Greenslade and of Florence Ada Greenslade (nee Pledger), of Dunedin, Otago; husband of Dorothea Veronica Greenslade of Dunedin.

    Attended John McGlashen College.

    After leaving school, worked as a Brewer.

    Favourite sports - rugby, pig-shooting and deer-stalking.

    Went to Taieri as an Instructor (prob. in 1940).

    Held his civil pilots "A" License and Rank of Pilot Officer in Territorial Air Force.

    Flight Lieutenant - July 1941

    Later appointed Flight Commander

    April - November 1943 - Piloted a Havard Aircraft, which was used for co-operation with the Army Anti-Aircraft Units.

    At time of his death, he was pilot of an Avenger which was reported missing while on an operational flight over New Britain. It probably crashed west of Vunakanau. Lt. J.C. Morrison (navigator) and F/Sgt W. McCloud were the other crew members.

    Place of death for all 3 Vunakanau Aerodrome shot down by Japanese Ack Ack NW of runaway 10 miles SW of Rabaul New Britain 9.50am Sunday 28th May 1944 (Public Source, 7/7/15) AWMM
