  • Frederick William Halliwell was born in Gisborne, on 6 January 1918 to parents Herbert Halliwell 1890-1957 and Charlotte Halliwell (nee Hanford) 1891-1973. Frederick William Halliwell married Violet Alice Newald on 14 February 1938. Fred & Violet had two children: Frederick December 1938, and June 1940. As a married man with children he did not need to enlist in the forces until 1943. However people abused and spat at him because he was not in uniform, and sent him white feathers in the mail. Frederick William Halliwell, my grandad, enlisted in 1940. On the night of 15 July 1942 he was killed in action at Al-Ruweisat Ridge, Al Alamein, Egypt.Grandad's death has had a profound effect not only on his family but the generations that have followed.Grandad you are remembered always, and especially on ANZAC day. I salute you, and will always remember your ultimate sacrifice for your family a
