  • David Hawkes was the son of George Augustus Hawkes (WW1 48793) and Lillias Hawkes of Takapuna, Auckland.

Hawkes was educated at Whangarei Boys High School.

David served on the Whangarei Harbour Board prior to enlisting with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).

The air accident occurred when he was practice bombing flying, the release gear failed, the trainees had been asked to observe the gear and it was presumed he had fallen to his death.

Three brothers served in WW2: the eldest brother served in the Navy; Graeme Bradshaw Hawkes (38061) a POW and David Handforth Hawkes (NZ40739) who was killed in RNZAF flying training accident in New Zealand. AWMM
