  • Rex McMillan was the son of Herbert McMillan and of Catherine McMillan (nee Finlayson), of Riverhead, Auckland, New Zealand, and the grandson of J. Finlayson of Waipu. Educated at Riverhead and Mt Albert Grammar School and prior to his sailing for England was employed in the Health Department in Whangarei. He received his commission in Britain.

    Was a member of the Old Boys' Football Club and a prominent member of the Mairtown and Whangarei Tennis Clubs.

    McMillan was attempting an emergency forced landing because of a suspected coolant leak. On approach his plane spun in and crashed at Bower Hinton Farm 1.5 miles NE of South Petherton. AWMM
