  • Cyril Hewson was the son of William Joseph and Laura Mabel Hewson, of Thames, Auckland, New Zealand.

    Sergeant Hewson and a Free French Officer, Colonel Jean Colonna d'Ornano, were the only fatal casualties in a Long Range Deseret Group raid on a fort at Murzuk, Libya. Shot while standing to fix a jammed Vickers gun.They were initially buried side by side at Murzuk. Later buried at Tripoli. AWMM

  • Cyril Hewson was my Nana's older brother. I remember the story about him being buried in the desert with a French soldier from my childhood (a long time ago). It is a dream of mine to visit his grave in Tripoli one day...
