  • Noel Hickson was the son of Harold Jordan Hickson and Eileen Margaret Hickson, of Woodville, New Zealand.

" By 1940 Noel was working on a dairy farm near Levin. He'd go to the dances, but he was finding all the Air Force boys were getting all the girls, so he said this was no good to him and he joined the air force. He became a wireless air gunner and went off to Canada and Bermuda before he was shipped to Northern Ireland where the Liberators were based for anti-submarine patrol. the Liberator was built with very thin wings to cut down the drag so that they could go a lot faster. But to counteract that they had to put very strong motors on them - heavy motors. When the motors cut out, of course they had no glide characteristics and they'd go down like a stone. That's what happened to Noel's plane. There were seven of them on the crew of his Liberator. The plane took off from Loch Foyle in Northern Ireland and the motors cut out, all four motors, and then it crashed into the sea and they never recovered the wreck or any of the bodies. So that's what happened to Noel, my younger brother." - (Hickson, John Patrick NZ007248) AWMM
