  • Raymond Fox was the son of Charles James Fox, accountant, and Mary Louise Fox (nee Winkelmann).

He was educated for four years at St John's College, Auckland. He had passed sixth standard at Primary School.

Before the war he was employed by Lyttelton Times Company

In May, 1937, he married Amelia Schutt, of Wellsford. She was the daughter of William Schutt, farmer, and Amelia Schutt (nee Fogler).

He served a total of 4 years, 120 days, of which 4 years and 22 days were spent overseas.

He returned to New Zealand on the 'Northumberland' on 28 March 1919.

The following notice appeared in the New Zealand Gazette No. 55, 5 July 1923: "2nd Lieutenant R.V. Fox (lst Battalion) is retired under the provisions of General Order No. 184/21, and is granted permission to retain his rank and wear the prescribed uniform."

The Auckland Museum Library's manuscripts collection holds copies of Fox's military personnel file, War Veteran's Allowance Certificate and his marriage certificate. [Ref. MS 2002/206]

Soldiers being transported to and from Europe were bound by numerous rules and regulations designed to preserve 'good order and discipline and the maintenance of a healthy military spirit among all ranks'. Included in these standing orders for HMNZ Transports issued by New Zealand Military Forces Headquarters in Wellington was one regarding false teeth. It read: Artificial Teeth.Officers Commanding Troops on all transports are directed to issue an order prior to vessels putting to sea that soldiers wearing artificial teeth must be careful to remove same before being seasick. A charge of two pounds per denture will be made for replacing any lost through neglect of this order.' (New Zealand Military Forces Special General Order No. 603/1917) AWMM
